The General Assembly’s finance committee had an amendment ready last week to add Sunday liquor sales to an unrelated sales-tax bill, but declined to bring it up for a vote.

Sunday liquor sales, a perennial issue at the Capitol in recent years, would have been added to a bill charging sales tax to room remarketers (HB 6626), according to a staff memo to the committee.

Supporters of Sunday liquor sales may not have had enough votes on the committee to pass the amendment. However, the amendment is likely to come up on the House floor, where a close vote is expected.

The major parties are split on Sunday sales. Legislators from border towns typically support the change because of alcohol’s availability across state lines on Sundays.
